The Real Reason You Keep Making Bad Decisions

Making Bad Decisions

Coherence, Fragmentation, and the Hidden Architecture Behind Choice

By Alchemist Iris Chapman

Most people believe bad decisions come from a lack of intelligence. They don’t.

Many highly intelligent, wildly successful people repeatedly make choices they later deeply regret. They stay in relationships that hurt them. They actively sabotage professional opportunities they worked years to create. They spend money they know they should save, and they brush past blatant warning signs they clearly recognize.

Then, when the dust settles, they hit a wall of shame and ask themselves the same agonizing questions:

  • “Why did I do that?”
  • “I knew better.”
  • “I saw this coming from a mile away.”
  • “Why do I keep making the exact same mistake?”

The answer is often far simpler—and significantly deeper—than a lack of intellect or willpower. The problem isn’t that you lack intelligence. The problem is that the internal system making the decision is fragmented.

The Myth of the “Bad Decision”

When we look back on our lives, we like to neatly label certain choices as “bad decisions.” But almost no decision actually feels bad while you are making it. In the exact moment of choice, it usually makes perfect sense.

The real question we need to ask is: Who inside of you was making that decision?

This is where many people become confused. We mistakenly assume there is only one, single, unified “self” sitting at the wheel making choices. In reality, human beings contain multiple, competing motivations operating at the exact same time:

This Part Seeks…While That Part Fears or Seeks…
SafetyFreedom
ConnectionIntimacy (Fear of Vulnerability)
GrowthComfort and Familiarity
TruthExternal Approval

When these motivations pull in completely different directions, your internal system becomes fragmented. And fragmented systems naturally produce fragmented decisions.

The Decision Was Not Irrational

Consider a person who stays trapped in an unhealthy, toxic relationship. From the outside, their choice appears entirely irrational. Friends and onlookers shake their heads and say, “Why don’t they just leave?”

Yet inside that person’s system, an intense, hidden negotiation is taking place. One part of them desperately wants freedom, while another part paralyzingly fears abandonment. One part clearly recognizes the ongoing harm, while another part vividly remembers the pain of past loneliness. One part sees a bright future, while another part just wants immediate emotional relief right now.

The resulting decision to stay is not irrational. It is fragmented. The system is trying its best to satisfy multiple competing objectives simultaneously. This is why so many people feel completely trapped in patterns they consciously want to escape.

Why Knowing Better Isn’t Enough

One of the most frustrating aspects of the human experience is knowing exactly what to do and still not doing it. Most people have been there. They know they should exercise, rest, set firm boundaries, save money, leave toxic environments, speak honestly, or take massive action.

Yet, they do the exact opposite.

This gap between knowledge and action breeds heavy shame. People begin to internalize the failure, thinking, “Something must be fundamentally wrong with me.”

But knowledge and coherence are not the same thing. Knowledge tells you what is true; coherence allows you to actually act on it. Without coherence, your knowledge remains trapped in the mind as a nice theory, while the unhealed, fragmented parts of your system continue to drive your actual behavior.

Why Self-Trust Begins to Collapse

When people say, “I don’t trust myself,” what they usually mean is, “I cannot predict what I am going to do.”

A person may make earnest promises to themselves in the morning and break them by the afternoon. They set grand goals and abandon them weeks later. They commit to a major life change and abruptly reverse course. Eventually, self-trust completely erodes.

This erosion doesn’t happen because the person lacks inherent worth. It happens because their system lacks consistency. Trust requires predictability, and predictability requires coherence. A fragmented system struggles to trust itself because completely different parts are constantly taking turns jumping into the driver’s seat.

Leaning on Fragmented Understanding

One of the most misunderstood pieces of spiritual wisdom is the age-old instruction to “trust with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.” Many interpret this as a command to completely distrust their own minds, which leaves them feeling disconnected, helpless, and uncertain.

But the root issue is not human understanding itself. The issue is fragmented understanding.

A fragmented system can only see isolated pieces of reality:

  • Fear sees one piece.
  • Anger sees another.
  • Shame sees a different piece.
  • Trauma sees yet another.

Each individual fragment genuinely believes it possesses the entire, absolute truth—yet it only sees a tiny, distorted portion. When you rely entirely upon a fragmented perception, confusion and contradiction are the inevitable results.

Coherence Changes Everything

A coherent system functions with a completely different level of efficiency. Thought aligns with feeling. Feeling aligns with action. Action aligns with core values, and speech aligns with deep truth.

The entire system begins operating as one unified whole. This doesn’t mean your life suddenly becomes perfect, but it does make your life incredibly clear.

Choices become simple because fewer internal forces are pulling you in opposite directions. The exhausting question is no longer, “Which part of me wins this internal war?” The question simply becomes, “What serves the whole?” Coherence creates the baseline stability required for genuine self-trust to emerge.

The Hidden Cost of Fragmentation

Fragmentation is incredibly exhausting. It demands immense energy to manage an internal system where the parts are constantly at war. Every daily decision feels incredibly heavy, every choice creates instant doubt, and every bad outcome becomes another stick to beat yourself with.

Chakra & Energy Healing Focus

From an energy healing perspective, recurring bad decisions are loud, flashing warning lights that point to specific areas of fragmentation within your energetic centers:

  • The Earth Star Chakra may be struggling with belonging, rendering you ungrounded and disoriented.
  • The Root Chakra may be panicking, seeking survival and safety at any emotional cost.
  • The Sacral Chakra may be driving impulsive choices just to get immediate emotional relief or unhealthy attachment.
  • The Solar Plexus Chakra may be compromised, struggling to assert personal authority and self-governance.
  • The Heart Chakra may be trapped in a loop—desiring deep connection while simultaneously fearing vulnerability.
  • The Throat Chakra may clearly know the truth, but lacks the coherence to express it out loud.

When these centers operate in conflict rather than cooperation, clear decision-making becomes impossible. Healing is not about punishing these parts into perfection; it is about restoring their coherence so the entire system can speak with one voice.

Final Thoughts

The real reason you keep making bad decisions is not a lack of intelligence, discipline, or willpower. The real issue is that different parts of you are pursuing entirely different goals.

One is chasing safety, one is begging for comfort, one is looking for love, one is fighting for freedom, and one is seeking truth. When those parts are disconnected from one another, your decisions will always be fragmented.

But when you begin to build coherence, something remarkable happens. Self-trust naturally returns—not because you force yourself to believe a mantra, but because your system has finally become someone worth trusting.

The path forward is not perfection. The path forward is coherence, and every single step toward coherence is a step toward building your life consciously.
