Tarot Decode: The Breaking of Chains and the Restoration of the Kingdom
By Alchemist Iris Chapman
Revelation Chapters 16 and 17 are traditionally interpreted through a single, terrifying lens: divine judgment. The bowls of wrath are poured out, the great city of Babylon falls, the beast’s kingdom collapses, the earth trembles, and the old cosmic order comes to a violent end.
Yet, beneath this catastrophic imagery lies a much deeper, internal reality. It is an architectural account of hidden attachment, systemic dependency, unconscious bondage, radical transmutation, and ultimate restoration. This is why the events of Revelation 16 and 17 align so precisely not only with Death and Temperance, but also with The Devil.
- The Devil reveals the hidden chains of agreement.
- Death completely breaks and dissolves the chains.
- Temperance integrates the surviving wisdom and stabilizes the vacuum.
Together, these archetypes govern one of the most critical thresholds in Adam’s initiation into the Logos Chakra: the exact moment the sovereign reclaims the creative current that his internal citizens unconsciously used to imprison the kingdom.
The Nature of The Devil: The Illusion of Agreement
The Devil is arguably one of the most misunderstood archetypes in the entire Major Arcana. Many assume it represents a literal, external personification of evil. Yet, its esoteric reality is far closer to home.
The Devil represents psychological bondage, systemic codependency, and the willing surrender of sovereignty. It is the persistent illusion that an external construct holds authority over the sovereign center. As Paul observed in Romans 6:16:
“Do you not know that when you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey?”
The adversary’s power is never sustained by brute force. It is sustained by agreement—an unconscious slumber where the citizens of the psyche must “come to their senses and escape from the trap” (2 Timothy 2:26), realizing the snare endured only through their own daily compliance.
The Loose Chains and Internal Governance
Traditional Tarot iconography depicts two figures standing chained before the pedestal of the Devil. If you look closely at the imagery, a striking operational truth emerges: the loops around their necks are extraordinarily loose. The figures could lift them off and step into autonomy at any moment.
They embody the ancient prophetic decree of Isaiah 52:2: “Shake off your dust; arise and take your seat, Jerusalem. Free yourself from the chains on your neck, Daughter Zion, now a captive.”
They remain bound not because they are physically locked down, but because the internal citizens have completely identified with their subjugation:
- Total identification with limitation.
- The chronic belief that the prison is essential for survival.
- The conviction that sovereign freedom is unattainable.
- The inverted illusion that power belongs to the construct rather than the creator.
The Beast, the Mark, and Babylon the Great
Throughout the Apocalypse, the beast wields immense dominion across the territory. But how does it govern? It rules because the internal citizens continually surrender their jurisdiction to feed it. Fear fuels its edicts. Accusation sustains its throne. Unconscious compliance pays its daily tribute.
The mark of the beast signifies this exact surrender of mental and physical jurisdiction. It is the tragic moment the internal commonwealth forgets that the vitality sustaining the monster was taxed directly from Adam’s own center.
Revelation 17 introduces the majestic personification of this systemic dependency: Babylon the Great. She does not arrive as an ugly or repulsive entity. Clothed in purple and scarlet, glittering with gold, precious stones, and pearls (Revelation 17:4), she embodies the warning of 2 Corinthians 11:14 that deception routinely masquerades as radiant illumination. Upon witnessing her empire, John writes:
“When I saw her, I was greatly astonished.” (Revelation 17:6)
This reaction reveals the anatomy of deep delusion. An institutional attachment or parasitic habit rarely appears hideous in its prime; it looks luxurious, secure, and indispensable. Babylon represents the collective architecture of false dependency—the sprawling internal empire that persuades every citizen of the psyche that the soul cannot survive without its gilded chains.
“Why Are You Astonished?”
Faced with John’s paralysis, the angel delivers a sharp, piercing correction: “Why are you astonished?”
This is the pivotal turning point of the chapter. The angel does not validate the spectacle; he challenges John’s perceptual distortion. It is an instruction in pure sovereignty: Look deeper. Do not confuse outward luxury with divine authority. Do not mistake a long-standing addiction for essential life-support.
This shift in vision triggers the celestial command of Revelation 18:4: “Come out of her, my people, so that you will not share in her sins.” The moment the citizens revoke their consent, the illusion loses its structural integrity. Babylon is unmasked as an empty projection funded entirely by the sovereign throne it sought to usurp.
The Bowls of Revelation and the Severing of Supply
Once the illusion is perceived without distortion, the seven bowls of wrath are poured out. This is not arbitrary cosmic destruction; it is a calculated, surgical withdrawal of energy from the old codependent regime:
- [Bowl Poured] $\longrightarrow$ [Support Removed] $\longrightarrow$ [Euphrates Dries Up] $\longrightarrow$ [Illusion Collapses]
The sea turns to blood, the rivers dry up, the beast’s seat is cast into utter darkness, and the great river Euphrates evaporates. The counterfeit empire starves because its energetic supply lines have been severed. When the citizens cease their energetic payments, Babylon collapses under her own weight.
Death Dissolves the Scaffolding
This is where the archetype of Death enters the theater of consciousness. Death does not destroy Adam; Death dismantles what can no longer serve Adam’s eternal alignment. As scripture explains the termination of the lower nature, “our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with… because anyone who has died has been set free” (Romans 6:6–7).
Death dismantles the structural scaffolding of the ego. False identities dissolve, ancient dependencies wither, and the expired evolutionary cycle is formally closed. From the throne of the temple comes the definitive decree:
“It is done.” (Revelation 16:17)
The Holy Vacuum and the Emergence of Temperance
Every structural death creates an immense vacuum. A commonwealth cannot remain in perpetual mourning, a life cannot stay permanently undefined, and the sovereign cannot dwell indefinitely amid the smoking ruins of fallen systems.
This is where Temperance assumes command.
Temperance represents alchemical synthesis, divine proportion, and mature self-mastery—the spiritual harvest of enkráteia (Galatians 5:22–23). This archetype operates as the restorative master builder prophesied in Isaiah 58:12: the one who “will rebuild the ancient ruins and will raise up the age-old foundations… called Repairer of Broken Walls, Restorer of Streets with Dwellings.”
Temperance instructs the soul that true initiation is not merely about surviving the fire; it is about gathering, purifying, and integrating the eternal truths that endure through it.
| Archetype | Role in the Liberation of the Commonwealth | Canonical Anchor |
| The Devil | Exposes the loose chains of agreement and false dependency. | Romans 6:16 / Isaiah 52:2 |
| Death | Starves the counterfeit architecture and closes the old ledger. | Revelation 16:17 / Romans 6:6 |
| Temperance | Stabilizes the vacuum and synthesizes surviving wisdom. | Galatians 5:22–23 / Isaiah 58:12 |
Emotional Equilibrium and the Aquarian Current
The angel’s rebuke of John’s astonishment bears fruit here. Temperance installs complete emotional equilibrium in the presence of revelation. The sovereign embodies the composure of Philippians 4:12—grounded, observant, and undisturbed whether watching old paradigms burn or new foundations settle.
Traditional Temperance iconography depicts an angelic figure pouring liquid between two vessels, perfectly balancing opposing currents. In this alchemical work, the dual waters of experience are reconciled without spilling a drop. The destructive fire of the bowls and the clarifying waters of conscious awareness are synthesized into a coherent vessel. The internal citizens are reassigned to their righteous offices, and the consciousness is anchored upon an unshakeable foundation.

Revelation Chapters 16 and 17 unveil the ultimate constitutional law of Adam’s initiation into the Logos Chakra. As Christ declared in Luke 17:21, the kingdom is not found in outward observations or external capitals—it is entirely within. The most formidable prison the soul ever occupied was never external. The beast was sustained by internal allegiance, Babylon was financed by unconscious agreement, and the chains survived solely because they were mistaken for identity.
Death cleared the ruins. Temperance purified the vessels. Now, the conscious vessel is ready to receive and pour out the living water of the Logos Chakra—the uncreated Word that was in the beginning with God, containing the life that is the light of all humanity, shining in the darkness that could never overcome it (John 1:1–5).
The power that sustained the prison belonged to Adam all along. The Devil exposed it, Death concluded it, Temperance integrated it, and together they crown the sovereign center in the pristine clarity of the Logos.
