The Higher Chakras and the Tarot Suits

Tarot and the Bible

A Map of the Soul’s Developing Mission

By Alchemist Iris Chapman

Tarot and the chakra system are often treated as two separate spiritual technologies. One maps energy; the other maps human experience. Within the architecture of the 18-ChakraVerse, however, they operate together as a unified teaching system.

The chakras tell us where consciousness is developing. The Tarot tells us what kind of lesson consciousness is encountering there.

This synthesis becomes critical when Adam moves beyond the familiar inherited chakra system and enters the higher developmental centers. At these elevated thresholds, survival concerns fall away and the questions expand:

  • What patterns have my experiences created?
  • What do I truly desire?
  • What laws govern what I am attempting to build?
  • What am I willing to covenant myself to?
  • Has what I have learned actually become embodied?

Here, the Tarot serves not as fortune-telling or an external authority, but as an objective teaching architecture. The four suits provide four distinct curricula for four higher chakras.

The Major Arcana perform a different function entirely: they map the great initiation of Adam—the journey from Eden, out through experience, and back into Eden—through which Adam’s work is ultimately tested and proven.

Higher ChakraTarot CurriculumSoul MissionCore Diagnostic Question
Causal ChakraSuit of SwordsTruth · Discernment · Pattern RecognitionWhat pattern am I carrying?
Soul Star ChakraSuit of CupsPurpose · Desire · Soul CallingWhy did I come?
Stellar Gateway ChakraSuit of PentaclesDivine Law · Structure · Lawful ManifestationWhat law governs creation?
Covenant ChakraSuit of WandsCovenant · Sacred Responsibility · Directed WillWhat agreement am I embodying?

The architecture is precise:

  • Swords teach Adam to see.
  • Cups teach Adam to recognize desire.
  • Pentacles teach Adam to understand law.
  • Wands teach Adam to covenant the will.
  • The Major Arcana test what Adam has become through the entire journey.

Tarot as a Teaching Architecture

A master builder must understand the intrinsic properties of the materials being used. Wood behaves differently from stone; glass responds differently than iron; water cannot be structured like fire.

Consciousness follows the exact same principle:

  • Thought cannot be governed exactly like emotion.
  • Emotion cannot be managed exactly like physical resources.
  • Desire cannot be directed exactly like will.

Each demands its own discernment.

  • Swords teach through truth, mental clarity, conflict, perception, and discernment.
  • Cups teach through desire, communion, emotional depth, grief, love, and fulfillment.
  • Pentacles teach through manifestation, resources, labor, stewardship, structure, and physical law.
  • Wands teach through directed will, creative fire, calling, commitment, and sacred responsibility.

These become four distinct kinds of building material. Adam must learn how each operates.

The Causal Chakra and the Suit of Swords

Mission: Truth

Core Question: What pattern am I carrying?

The Causal Chakra governs soul memory, causation, recurring cycles, and the architecture accumulated across experience. Its curriculum is the Suit of Swords.

Swords cut, divide, distinguish, and expose. Symbolically, they allow Adam to separate what actually happened from the stories subsequently built around what happened:

  • What caused this?
  • What belief keeps reproducing this experience?
  • What assumption am I carrying?
  • What am I refusing to examine?
  • Where is fear distorting perception?
  • Where am I repeating an architecture whose origin I have never questioned?

An experience viewed solely from inside emotional pain can appear arbitrary. Viewed causally, it reveals structure: a repeated belief, an unexamined choice, an avoidance strategy, an inherited assumption, or a cyclic misunderstanding.

The purpose of the blade is never injury—it is surgical clarity.

CardWorking FunctionDiagnostic Question
Ace of SwordsBreakthrough; emerging truthWhat truth is becoming visible?
Two of SwordsImpasse; competing perceptionsWhat am I unwilling or unable to see clearly?
Three of SwordsPainful revelation; separationWhat has pain revealed to me?
Four of SwordsMental stillness; integrationWhat becomes clear when I stop reacting?
Five of SwordsEgo conflict; hollow victoryWhat pattern of conflict am I participating in?
Six of SwordsParadigm transition; mental departureWhat understanding allows me to move forward?
Seven of SwordsEvasion; tactical deceptionWhat is hidden, avoided, or handled indirectly?
Eight of SwordsSelf-imposed limitationWhat belief is functioning as a mental prison?
Nine of SwordsChronic anxiety; projectionWhat is my mind creating out of fear?
Ten of SwordsComplete narrative collapseWhat mental pattern has run out of usefulness?
Page of SwordsObjective curiosity; inquiryWhat requires rigorous investigation?
Knight of SwordsDecisive pursuit of truthWhat truth am I prepared to act upon?
Queen of SwordsUncompromising discernmentWhat remains once sentiment no longer clouds my sight?
King of SwordsGoverned intellect; sovereigntyCan I govern according to truth rather than reaction?

The Causal curriculum is complete within the Suit of Swords. Its work is truth; its instrument is discernment; its objective is to make hidden architecture visible.

The Soul Star Chakra and the Suit of Cups

Mission: Purpose

Core Question: Why did I come?

Where the Swords reveal structural patterns, the Suit of Cups explores what those experiences reveal about desire. The Soul Star Chakra holds the deeper blueprint of purpose—the calling beneath cultural conditioning, survival expectations, social identity, and accumulated accomplishment.

Cups contain, receive, overflow, and empty. They reveal what consciousness loves, values, mourns, celebrates, pursues, and continues to desire. Within the Soul Star, emotion becomes more than a passing feeling: it becomes diagnostic information about purpose.

The Desire Beneath the Desire

Consciousness frequently misidentifies its own longing.

  • Adam says: I want wealth. He receives wealth, yet something remains unsatisfied.
  • Adam says: I want wisdom. Wisdom comes, yet the journey continues.
  • Adam says: I want sovereignty. The kingdom is established, yet something deeper continues calling.

The earlier desire was not necessarily false; it was simply incomplete. The Soul Star presents the clarifying test: What do I continue to desire after receiving what I thought I wanted?

That question reveals the desire beneath the desire—and the desire beneath the desire reveals purpose.

CardWorking FunctionDiagnostic Question
Ace of CupsDivine invitation; pure receptivityWhat new calling or capacity is being poured into me?
Two of CupsSacred resonance; alignmentWhat recognizes itself through this union?
Three of CupsCommunal joy; shared frequencyWith whom is my soul purpose designed to be shared?
Four of CupsDivine discontent; reevaluationWhat no longer fulfills me, and what gift am I ignoring?
Five of CupsGrief; stripped expectationsWhat has loss revealed about what I actually value?
Six of CupsSoul memory; restored innocenceWhat dormant part of my blueprint is asking to return?
Seven of CupsCompeting desires; illusionWhich desire originates from my essence, and which does not?
Eight of CupsDeliberate departure; sacred questWhat must I walk away from to pursue true purpose?
Nine of CupsIndividual satisfactionIs receiving what I wanted enough?
Ten of CupsIntegrated communal fulfillmentWhat does wholeness look like beyond my own boundaries?
Page of CupsIntuitive opening; soul promptWhat quiet message is my spirit trying to deliver?
Knight of CupsDevotion; pursuit of callingWhat purpose am I willing to pursue?
Queen of CupsEmotional depth; anchored feelingCan I inhabit the depth of desire without drowning in it?
King of CupsEmotional equilibrium; authorityCan I govern a turbulent emotional ocean with stillness?

The Cups teach Adam to read desire rather than simply obey desire. That distinction is crucial: desire becomes evidence.

The Stellar Gateway Chakra and the Suit of Pentacles

Mission: Divine Law

Core Question: What law governs creation?

A clear mind and an awakened purpose are incomplete without understanding how creation works in form. The Stellar Gateway Chakra concerns Divine Law, timing, jurisdiction, cosmic order, and the governing architecture through which possibility becomes manifestation.

Its curriculum is the Suit of Pentacles. Pentacles are not merely about money; they concern the entire world of form: body, land, labor, resources, skill, time, exchange, cultivation, inheritance, stewardship, and physical construction.

Pentacles pose a foundational test: Do I understand the laws governing the material I am attempting to build with?

The Builder Must Respect the Material

An architect cannot simply declare: I want a tower here. The ground must be examined, the foundation must bear the load, and the materials must behave according to their natural properties. The laws of gravity do not become evil because the architect wishes they would disappear.

Likewise, the seed contains the architecture of the tree, but it still requires soil, moisture, and season to develop. Law is not an obstacle to creation; law is what makes stable creation possible.

CardWorking FunctionDiagnostic Question
Ace of PentaclesSeed material; physical opportunityWhat tangible opportunity has been placed in my care?
Two of PentaclesDynamic balance; coordinationHow must resources be organized to remain sustainable?
Three of PentaclesArchitecture; collaborationWhat specialized labor is required to build this structure?
Four of PentaclesConservation; controlAm I stewarding this resource or clinging to it from fear?
Five of PentaclesScarcity; structural testingWhat does limitation reveal about my foundations?
Six of PentaclesReciprocity; distributionIs the flow of resources balanced and lawful?
Seven of PentaclesTiming; cultivationHas sufficient time been allowed for this harvest to mature?
Eight of PentaclesCraftsmanship; repetitionWhat skill must I refine through disciplined practice?
Nine of PentaclesCultivated abundanceCan this structure sustain itself?
Ten of PentaclesLegacy; enduring systemsWhat am I constructing that can outlast me?
Page of PentaclesPractical inquiry; apprenticeshipWhat law or craft must I learn?
Knight of PentaclesConsistency; implementationCan I continue the work when inspiration fades?
Queen of PentaclesCultivation; living abundanceHow can I tend these resources so life flourishes?
King of PentaclesMaterial sovereignty; administrationCan I govern physical resources responsibly?

Pentacles teach Adam that creation is not merely imagined. It must be built.

The Covenant Chakra and the Suit of Wands

Mission: Sacred Agreement

Core Question: What agreement am I embodying?

Once Adam decodes the pattern through Swords, recognizes deeper purpose through Cups, and understands the laws of construction through Pentacles, another question appears: What am I willing to choose?

This is the territory of the Covenant Chakra. It governs intentional agreement, conscious commitment, destiny alignment, and sacred responsibility. Its curriculum is the Suit of Wands.

Wands carry fire: will, initiative, calling, movement, and creative force. A Wand declares: I will. The Covenant Chakra asks Adam whether that declaration is truly conscious.

Free Will Becomes Sacred Responsibility

At an early stage of development, free will is experienced simply as permission: I may choose. At the Covenant Chakra, the question matures into consecration: I understand what I am choosing. Am I willing to accept responsibility for that choice?

True covenant requires sovereign consent. The Wand transforms raw desire into directed fire—not impulse, not scattered ambition, not action for action’s sake, but conscious will directed toward a chosen agreement.

CardWorking FunctionDiagnostic Question
Ace of WandsIgnition; the chargeWhat assignment is asking for my yes?
Two of WandsDirection; chosen horizonWhat future am I actively choosing?
Three of WandsExpansion; committed movementWhat unfolds once I act upon my decision?
Four of WandsEstablished ground; stabilityWhat covenant has become stable enough to inhabit?
Five of WandsCompeting motives; frictionWhich priority receives authority when my desires conflict?
Six of WandsVictory; confirmationWhat has successful action confirmed about my direction?
Seven of WandsConviction; defenseWhat am I willing to stand for?
Eight of WandsAcceleration; activated willWhat happens when intention, action, and timing align?
Nine of WandsTested commitment; enduranceWill I maintain the covenant after being tested?
Ten of WandsResponsibility; burdenWhat have I agreed to carry—and what was never mine?
Page of WandsEmerging calling; discoveryWhat newly awakened fire deserves exploration?
Knight of WandsCourage; forward movementAm I prepared to move toward what I have chosen?
Queen of WandsEmbodied conviction; authorityCan I hold my fire without seeking permission?
King of WandsGoverned will; commandCan I direct creative power in service of covenant?

Wands teach Adam how to stand behind a conscious yes.

The Major Arcana: Adam’s Great Initiation

The Major Arcana belong to a different architecture. They are not another suit assigned to another chakra; they map the overarching initiatory journey of Adam: from Eden, out through experience, and back into Eden.

                ▼
       [ EDEN: MASTERY ]

The Minor Arcana provide specialized curricula; the Major Arcana prove the work. Adam has encountered desire, power, relationship, choice, law, attachment, loss, temptation, authority, transformation, death, integration, illumination, and judgment.

The question now becomes: Has Adam merely encountered these lessons, or has Adam become capable of governing himself within them?

Initiation does not merely instruct; it tests what has already been integrated.

Eden Out — Eden Back In

The biblical journey begins in a Garden. Adam encounters choice and leaves the protected environment of Eden for the world of experience. What follows is an expansive developmental curriculum:

  • Adam builds and destroys.
  • Adam loves and betrays.
  • Adam serves and rules.
  • Adam becomes enslaved and becomes king.
  • Adam accumulates and loses.
  • Adam learns wisdom and misuses wisdom.
  • Adam encounters the direct consequences of his own construction.

Again and again, experience reveals Adam to Adam.

Eventually, the biblical narrative arrives in Revelation, where the imagery returns to the very beginning: the Tree of Life appears again, the river flows, and divine communion is restored. What began in Genesis reaches completion in Revelation.

The Adam returning to Eden, however, is not the Adam who left it. The first Adam possessed innocence; the returning Adam possesses experience. The first Adam encountered the Tree before completing the curriculum; the returning Adam approaches the Tree having traveled through the entire architecture of the world.

This is not a retreat into ignorance. It is an entrance through mastery.

The Major Arcana as Proof of the Work

The archetypes of the Major Arcana represent the definitive trials within this initiatory journey:

  • The Emperor confronts Adam with government and divine order.
  • The Hierophant confronts Adam with sacred transmission and spiritual authority.
  • The Lovers confront Adam with union and conscious choice.
  • The Chariot confronts Adam with directed, disciplined will.
  • Strength asks whether power can be spiritually governed rather than merely wielded.
  • Justice confronts Adam with cosmic balance, law, and consequence.
  • Death asks whether Adam can release an outgrown identity whose work is complete.
  • Temperance tests whether opposing forces can be alchemically integrated.
  • The Star restores clear vision and unclouded hope.
  • The Moon requires movement through formless mystery without forfeiting discernment.
  • The Sun brings illumination into complete, radiant visibility.
  • Judgement calls Adam to account for what the entire cycle has produced.

And finally, The World.

The World is more than an ending: it is structural evidence. When Jesus declares, “I have overcome the world,” it represents an extraordinary alchemical statement. The conquest is not the domination of external empires or other people; it is the total government of his own internal world.

He conquered the world of desire, the world of fear, the world of power, the world of identity, the world of rejection, the world of suffering, the world of temptation, the world of the physical body, and the world of the ego.

Because his internal kingdom was governed, the external world could no longer dictate his state:

  • He could be praised without depending upon praise.
  • Rejected without surrendering purpose.
  • Mocked without relinquishing dignity.
  • Betrayed without abandoning his path.
  • Offered worldly dominion without becoming possessed by power.
  • Threatened without allowing fear to compromise his covenant.

The external world acted, but it could no longer override his internal government. That is the true meaning of conquest.

The World card seals the initiation. Adam has traveled the world, learned from the world, and proven that he can govern his own world.

The Overcomer and the Return

This illuminates the repeated promises in Revelation given “to the one who overcomes.” The overcomer is not someone who merely survives an external adversary; the overcomer is Adam, having become governable enough within to be entrusted with higher government without:

$$\text{Experience} \longrightarrow \text{Discernment} \longrightarrow \text{Self-Knowledge} \longrightarrow \text{Self-Government} \longrightarrow \text{Overcoming} \longrightarrow \text{Return}$$

The Tree of Life stands open once more. The Garden has not moved; Adam has changed. The return to Eden does not erase the journey—it proves the journey.

Four Curricula and One Great Initiation

This establishes a clear, unified architecture:

  • Causal Chakra (Swords) — SEE: Discern the pattern. What pattern am I carrying?
  • Soul Star Chakra (Cups) — DESIRE: Discover the purpose beneath the desire. Why did I come?
  • Stellar Gateway Chakra (Pentacles) — BUILD: Understand Divine Law and the mechanics of form. What law governs creation?
  • Covenant Chakra (Wands) — CHOOSE: Direct sovereign will into consecrated agreement. What agreement am I embodying?
  • The Major Arcana — PROVE THE WORK: Travel from Eden through experience, and return capable of governing the kingdom within.

The Minor Arcana teach the specialized lessons; the Major Arcana test whether those lessons have become fully embodied.

The Cards as Instruments of Construction

Within the 18-ChakraVerse, Tarot does not replace God, supersede Scripture, or bypass personal discernment. It does not dictate an unavoidable fate. Instead, it places a symbolic mirror before Adam.

When sitting with a card, the central question is never What is going to happen to me? The authentic inquiry is:

  • What is this image helping me see?
  • What building material am I working with?
  • What pattern is revealing itself?
  • What law is operating here?
  • What desire lies beneath this experience?
  • What agreement have I actually made?
  • What is this circumstance proving about my self-government?

The card never relieves Adam of responsibility; it returns responsibility directly to his hands.

The journey of Adam is a continuous transition from unconscious construction to conscious construction. Thought, emotion, experience, desire, will, body, relationships, and symbols are all raw building materials. The mature builder learns what each material does, respects its laws, and determines with absolute clarity what should be built.

The four suits provide the operational manual. The Major Arcana ensure the builder has been transformed by the build. At the conclusion of the initiation stands The World—not as proof that Adam has subdued everyone else, but as proof that he has finally established government over his own soul.

The world was the classroom. Experience was the curriculum. Self-government was the assignment. The return to Eden is not an accidental slip back into innocence—it is an entrance through conscious mastery.
