The Empty Vessel: Shadow-in-Service
Navel Chakra: Reuben: Centered One Gate
By Alchemist Iris Chapman
Within the architecture of the 18-ChakraVerse, the Navel Chakra serves as the birthplace of self-governance, personal responsibility, emotional containment, and a stable internal identity. But the journey into true inner sovereignty is rarely a direct, instantaneous leap.
Every gate within the Navel Chakra unfolds through three distinct expressions:
- The Aligned: The Centered One
- The Misaligned: The Hollow Core
- The Shadow-in-Service: The Empty Vessel
Between the heavy numbness of the Hollow Core—who has entirely disconnected from themselves—and the unshakeable presence of the Centered One, stands The Empty Vessel.
Unlike the misaligned expression, the Empty Vessel has not lost the capacity for centeredness. Their challenge is beautifully complex: they have successfully learned how to clear out the noise and create space within themselves.
They simply do not yet know what that space is for.
The Gift Hidden Within Emptiness
In our hyper-stimulated world, emptiness is almost universally viewed as a negative state. Most people spend their lives frantically sprinting away from it. They fill silence with noise, uncertainty with distraction, loneliness with frantic activity, and discomfort with consumption.
The Empty Vessel chooses a different, radically brave path: they sit with the emptiness.
At first, this acute awareness of the void is profoundly uncomfortable. Yet, it is also incredibly sacred. Growth cannot occur in a container that is already overflowing. By entering this phase, you have unconsciously begun the vital work of clearing out the clutter. The only problem is that you haven’t yet learned how to comfortably inhabit the room you’ve made.
When the Old Self No Longer Fits
The archetype of the Empty Vessel almost always emerges during major life disruptions and structural transitions:
- A long-term career comes to an end.
- A foundational relationship changes or dissolves.
- A deeply ingrained belief system collapses.
- A safe, familiar role falls away.
As the old identity dissolves, you are left asking a haunting question: “Who am I now?”

"What worked" "Who am I now?" "I am anchored"
What once provided flawless stability no longer works. What once felt like absolute certainty now feels questionable. This suspension between worlds can trigger an undercurrent of fear, but it is actually the ultimate proof that a deeper level of self-governance is trying to emerge. The old structure had to be dismantled so a more authentic one could be built.
Reuben and the Space Between Impulse and Wisdom
Reuben’s story in the 18-ChakraVerse reflects the agonizing struggle of trying to exercise governance before reaching full spiritual maturity.
Impulse acts immediately, driven by pressure. Wisdom pauses, rooted in presence.
The Empty Vessel lives entirely in the quiet, agonizing space between the two. Your old, impulsive, knee-jerk reactions no longer feel aligned or satisfying. However, your mature, anchored responses have not yet fully developed.
As a result, you live suspended. You are no longer who you were, but you are not yet who you are becoming. While the outside world might mistake this quiet suspension for stagnation, an immense, invisible internal restructuring is occurring. Your vessel is being seasoned and prepared.
How the Empty Vessel Appears in Daily Life
If you are navigating this Shadow-in-Service expression, you will likely experience:
- A distinct feeling of detachment from old identities and pastimes.
- The quiet questioning of long-held personal or spiritual beliefs.
- A strange emotional flatness or “blankness” following a period of intense personal growth.
- A persistent, background sense of waiting for an unknown shift.
- Temporary difficulty defining a clear personal or professional direction.
- Instinctively pulling back from old social patterns without knowing what will replace them.
- An intense, internal craving for self-reflection and solitude.
The Danger of Filling the Space Too Quickly
The ultimate test for the Empty Vessel is the temptation to rush.
When the silence gets too loud and the uncertainty becomes too heavy, the urge to grab the nearest available liferaft is overwhelming. Many people abandon their transformation prematurely at this stage. To avoid sitting with the unknown, they frantically adopt the first new identity, belief system, relationship, or distraction that presents itself.
The wisdom of this gate is found strictly within the waiting.
The vessel must remain open, clean, and empty long enough for something genuinely authentic to emerge. If you fill it with cheap substitutes out of panic, you merely rebuild the old prison with new wallpaper.
The Sacred Function: Moving Toward The Centered One
| Stage | Inner State | Action |
|---|---|---|
| The Hollow Core | Disconnected, numb, fractured | Avoiding the self entirely through external noise. |
| The Empty Vessel | Open, waiting, transitional | Holding the space open despite the discomfort of the unknown. |
| The Centered One | Anchored, integrated, sovereign | Inhabiting the internal space with absolute clarity and presence. |
The Empty Vessel is not empty because you have failed or because something is fundamentally missing from your soul. It is empty because something entirely new is being formed. It creates the clean laboratory required for real discernment, maturity, and a sovereign identity.
To transition from the Vessel to the Centered One, you must learn to trust the process of becoming. Instead of rushing to fill the void, listen to it. Instead of forcing certainty, cultivate soft presence.
Gradually, the internal vacuum transforms. The emptiness shifts into an anchor. The waiting ripens into wisdom. The terrifying void becomes your unshakeable center.
The Spiritual Lesson
The Navel Chakra ultimately demands an answer to a single question:
“Can I remain present with myself while a new self is being formed?”
The Empty Vessel takes a deep breath, looks into the unknown, and whispers: “I am learning.”
This gate teaches us that emptiness is not the absence of life; it is the sacred womb where your personal sovereignty is prepared. You are not lost. You are simply making room for the magnificent version of yourself that is finally ready to emerge.
🧠 Reflection Question
What have you released or lost recently that may actually be creating the sacred space required for a more authentic version of yourself to emerge?
